Using a thermometer of known accuracy (reference thermometer), insert probe into base port and leave in situ until thermometer display is absolutely stable. Hold infrared thermometer immediately over the mouth of the comparator tube and beam on to the base section. Compare the readings for the two instruments and the difference (if any) indicates the accuracy drift of the infrared thermometer. In addition, working probe thermometers can be checked against a unit of known accuracy.
